Plogging is a new Scandinavian trend that is as popular as it is weird. It is a fitness routine that combines running with picking up trash. Yes, you go out there to your regular running session but you take a pointed stick and a bag to pick up the trash you find on your workout trail. So you are not only helping your body but you are also helping the environment.
The term "plogging" comes from the portmanteau of jogging and the Swedish for "pick up", plocka upp. As you probably guessed, the trend originated in Sweden.
In this way, plogging becomes a routine that combines running with lunging or squatting. It is actually a pretty good workout. The application LifeSum, very popular among runners, has even allowed users to log in and track their plogging activity. According to the app, a typical "plogger" will burn 288 calories in 30 minutes. This is roughly the same amount of calories you burn while jogging.
Social media, of course, has become an important part of the spreading of the new workout trend. There are plenty of #plogging Instagram pictures that show users what plogging looks like in the real world.
The app LifeSum and Keep America Beautiful partnered last month to support this fitness trend. Mike Rosen, senior VP of marketing and communications at Keep America Beautiful, said in a statement, "Plogging is brilliant because it is simple and fun while empowering everyone to help create cleaner, greener, and more beautiful communities. All you need is running gear and a bag for trash or recyclables, and you are not only improving your own health, but your local community, too."
